Free or Pro for a One-Off Photo Project? How to Decide

For a one-off project, the free plan is enough if the project fits into a few days at two creations a day and needs at most one short video clip. Pro makes sense when you have a deadline, need several options per image, want more than one video clip, or will keep using the tools every week. The simplest way to decide is to count how many creations the project needs, then compare that with what each plan gives you per day.

Step 1: count the creations

Write down every image and clip the project needs, then add a margin for reruns. Generation is sampled, so plan for about one extra run for every two images where likeness matters.

Example: a LinkedIn headshot for yourself.

• 1 headshot, plus 1 rerun = 2 creations
• That is one day on the free plan.

Example: a restored slideshow for a parent's anniversary.

• 12 photos to restore, plus 4 reruns = 16 creations
• On free, that is about eight days. On Pro, about three days, and faster if you use variation packs.

Step 2: check for a deadline

The free plan paces you: one creation every four hours. That is fine for curiosity and slow projects. It is not fine when the event is on Saturday.

If your count divided by two is more days than you have, a weekly Pro plan is usually the right tool: short, cheap, and removes the wait.

Step 3: check for video

The free plan includes one 5-second clip. If the project is a single animated photo, that covers it. If it is a series of Reels or a slideshow with several moving portraits, you need Pro's ten monthly clips and the longer lengths. Step 4: check whether you need options

Some projects need choice: a cartoon gift where you want to pick the best of four, a headshot for a website where several people will vote. Variation packs of 2 or 4 on Pro count as one creation. On free, each option is a separate creation and a four-hour wait.

For ongoing use, monthly and yearly plans make more sense than repeated weekly plans. Yearly is the cheaper option per month if you know you will keep using it.

Things people forget

• Storage. Free results are deleted after seven days. On a slow free project, download each result as you go.
• The web sign-up bonus. In the browser studio, you can make one image without an account and three more after signing up. For a one-off text-to-image, headshot, background or style transfer job, that alone may be enough. Try it at the studio.
• Refunds. Failed generations do not count, on either plan.
• Cancelling. If you choose weekly Pro for a project, download everything before it ends.

Honest view

Plenty of people never need Pro. If you make a headshot once a year and play with cartoons now and then, the free allowance is designed to cover you. Pro is for pace, video and volume. Buying it for a project you could finish in three relaxed days on free is not a good use of money.

A worked example: two people, two projects

Aylin wants a new LinkedIn headshot and a cartoon of herself for her personal website. She counts: one headshot plus a rerun, one cartoon plus a rerun. Four creations. She makes the headshot in the browser studio using the web sign-up images, then makes the cartoon in the app over the next day. She never needs Pro.

Marco runs social media for a small gym and wants twelve images and four short clips each month: before-and-after style edits, background changes for product shots and animated posters. On the free plan, twelve images take six days, and four clips are not possible because free includes one 5-second clip. A monthly plan covers him, and he considers yearly once he is sure the routine will last.

• Choosing yearly for a one-off. For a single project, weekly or monthly is usually the better fit.

• Is there a date? An event, a launch or a deadline is the strongest reason to remove the four-hour wait.
• Is video central? If the project is mostly moving images, the free clip will not stretch far.
• Will I be back next month? If yes, a monthly plan is simpler than buying weekly plans repeatedly.
• Do other people need to choose? Variation packs let a group pick from options without extra creations.
• Can I be patient? If the honest answer is yes and none of the above apply, stay on free.

Answering these takes a minute and prevents both mistakes: paying for something the free plan would have covered, and struggling with a pace that does not fit a real deadline.

Start free, upgrade if you hit the wall

The lowest-risk path is to start the project on free. If after a day you can see the count or the deadline will not work, move to a weekly plan.
